Notables includes achievements, honors and other distinctions earned by Georgia Gwinnett College and the members of its extended community. This includes faculty, staff, administration, students and close associates of the college. Notables features recognitions spanning academics and scholarship, leadership positions, community service and involvement, individual achievements and other news of significance. Members of the GGC community may submit items using our Notables form. Notables is updated with the spring, summer and fall publication of Engage magazine and Engage Online.
The Art Committee brought the first work of commissioned art to the GGC campus, “Pursuit,” a mural by local artist Peter Ferrari.
Victor Camargo-Fouche, ’15, was awarded the college’s first Global Studies Certification at the 2015 spring commencement ceremony.
Joye Cauthen, administrative assistant, is a Southern Literary Trail featured speaker who shares the story of her acclaimed great aunt Caroline Miller, writer of “Lamb in His Bosom.” Miller was the first of three Georgia authors to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Literature.
Gabrielle Costello, ’15, was the GGC recipient of the 2015 Georgia Board of Regents Academic Recognition Day Award.
Denise Dolan, AEC coordinator for the Writing Center, and Rebecca Dix, a professional writing tutor and GGC graduate, presented at the 2015 Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) Tutor Research Symposium. They facilitated a workshop on using collaborative creative writing activities to promote confidence and creativity among developmental writers. Dolan also led a discussion on supporting disabled students in writing centers.
Dr. Jim Fatzinger, senior associate provost for Student Affairs, and Dr. Jo Galle, associate provost for Academic Affairs, were selected to present at the National Associate of Student Personnel Administrators 2015 Assessment and Persistence Conference.
The GGC Business and Finance Team received the prestigious Certificate of Achievement of Excellence Award for Financial Reporting, awarded annually by the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts.
Dr. Michael Gunther, assistant professor of history, presented the paper, “‘Crumbling to Dust’: British Military Engineering Efforts in the Hudson-Champlain Corridor in the Seven Years’ War and its Aftermath,” at the International Conference on Military Engineering in America, at the University of Seville in Spain.
Adrienne Harmer, instruction coordinator/assistant department head for Research Services in the Library and Learning Center, was accepted into the highly competitive Association of College & Research Libraries Information Literacy Immersion Program. She also completed the Intentional Teaching: Reflective Teaching to Improve Student Learning Program.
Dr. C. Douglas Johnson, professor of leadership and management, has been named to the National Advisory Board of the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS). He also serves as advisor of the GGC NSLS chapter.

Katherine Kyle, associate vice president for Human Resources, was selected for the 2015-16 cohort for the Higher Education Resource Services Wellesley Leadership Institute.
Te’ron Lindsey, ‘14, has been named to the National Society for Leadership and Success Presidents Advisory Council. He served as the GGC chapter’s charter president. Since the GGC chapter’s chartering in 2014, about 250 students have been inducted.
Catherine Neiner, director of Career Development and Advising, presented, “MicroRetreat for New Professionals,” at the Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers annual conference.
Deborah Reato, director of Veteran Success, was named Registered Student Organization (RSO) Advisor of the Year for her work with GGC’s veterans organization, Coalition of Veteran Engagement, Readiness and Trust (C.O.V.E.R.T.).
The American Council on Education (ACE) has named Dr. Jennifer H. Stephens, associate vice president of Public Affairs, an ACE Fellow for the 2015-2016 academic year. The ACE Fellows Program is designed to strengthen institutions and leadership in American higher education by identifying and preparing emerging leaders for senior positions in college and university administration. Forty-seven Fellows, nominated by the senior administration of their institutions, were selected this year following a rigorous application process.
History instructor Dr. Shane Tomashot has received his Ph.D. in world history from Georgia State University.
Dr. Binh Tran, assistant professor of information technology, received a perfect 5.0 overall quality rating with 50+ student ratings on the Rate My Professors Web site.
Regina Venson, student loan default manager, was selected for a leadership role charged with coordinating statewide activities for the Federal Reserve’s “Money Smart Week,” a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage personal finances. Some of the campaign activities are also provided to GGC students through Student Affairs, in partnership with other campus offices.
Chris Walden, ’15, is the first and only student in GGC history to accumulate more than nine championships in intramural sports. As a player-coach he has recruited several students to participate in multiple intramural sports such as flag football, basketball, soccer and dodge ball. He also represented the college at the state level and hopes to earn several intramural state championships for GGC.
Gihon Warner, ’16, won a poetry competition honoring the “Pursuit” mural in Building A and performed for his fellow students at the college’s Wordstock Poetry Festival.
Dr. Darin Wilson was named 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. It is the second time he has been so honored.
